Shopify SKU search not working? Here's what broke — and how to fix it.

If customers (or your own staff) type an exact SKU, barcode or partial model number into your Shopify store's search and get back pages of unrelated products — you're not imagining it, and it isn't your theme. Something changed on Shopify's side in mid-2026, and there is no setting to change it back.

What happened in June 2026

In early June 2026, Shopify rolled a new semantic search engine into storefront search for stores using its free Search & Discovery app. Semantic search interprets the meaning of a query rather than matching it literally. That can help with queries like "warm jacket for hiking" — but it is the opposite of what you want for a SKU. An exact part number now gets "broadened" into whatever the model considers related, which in practice means hundreds of irrelevant results.

This isn't speculation: Shopify staff confirmed on the developer forums that "when you search by SKU, semantic search broadens the results beyond exact matches" and described it as a known limitation. A later partial fix pins an exact SKU match to the top of results, but unrelated products still appear beneath it, and partial-number searches (the way real customers actually search) remain unreliable. The reviews on the Search & Discovery listing — 2.6★ as of October 2026 — tell the same story in merchants' own words.

Who this hits hardest

Any store where codes are how people shop: auto and machinery parts, electronics and IT hardware, dental/medical/scientific equipment, pens and watches and other model-number goods, trading cards, B2B wholesale of any kind — and every store whose staff look products up by SKU while on the phone with a customer.

Workarounds (and their limits)

1. JavaScript patches. Some merchants hide the junk results below the exact match with custom theme JavaScript. It's fragile (breaks with theme updates), only treats the symptom, and does nothing for partial-number searches.

2. Search operators. Shopify's semantic layer doesn't apply to queries using search syntax, so technically precise customers could quote their query. Real shoppers won't.

3. Stuffing SKUs into product titles. Stuffing SKUs into product titles makes exact search work at the cost of ugly listings and SEO. Most stores regret it.

The real fix: search that doesn't route through Shopify's engine

A third-party search app that builds its own index of your catalog and serves results from it restores control: exact SKU and barcode matches first, partial-number matching that works, typo tolerance you can switch off for code fields, and filters without the native 25-filter / 5,000-product caps. When evaluating any option, check four things: does it keep its own index (or just re-skin Shopify's API)? Can you control matching per field? What does it do to your page speed? And is the pricing flat or metered?

Common questions

Why did SKU search suddenly stop working on my Shopify store?

In early June 2026, Shopify rolled a new semantic (AI) search engine into storefront search for stores using its Search & Discovery app. Semantic search interprets the meaning of a query instead of matching it literally, so an exact SKU like TRL-2240 gets 'broadened' into loosely related products. Shopify staff confirmed on the developer forums that this is a known limitation of how its semantic search works.

Can I turn Shopify's semantic search off?

No. There is no merchant-facing toggle to disable semantic search or restore the previous exact-match behavior. A partial fix later pushed exact SKU matches to the top of results, but unrelated products still appear below them, and partial SKU or model-number searches remain unreliable.

Does the search dropdown (predictive search) match SKUs?

No — Shopify's predictive search only matches product titles, product types, variant titles and vendors by design. SKUs and barcodes are not matched in the dropdown at all, regardless of the semantic search change.

What actually fixes SKU search?

A search app that maintains its own index of your catalog and serves results independently of Shopify's engine. That restores exact and partial SKU/barcode matching, lets you control typo tolerance per field, and removes the native 25-filter and 5,000-product collection caps.
